According to the archaeological excavations the first settlements on the territory of the Sumy belong to the Slavic tribe Nords. The official date of the Sumy foundation is 26 April 1655. According to the local legend, the settlers headed by Ataman Gerasim Kondratyev, arrived on the site of todays Sumy in 1655, they found three hunting bags with coins, which depicted on the emblem of the Sumy. The city has well developed machine-building industry as well as chemical and petrochemical industry. The largest enterprises of the Sumy are PJSC "Sumskoe NPO imeni Frunze", JSC "LOD VNIIkompressormash", PJSC "Sumykhimprom". There are 4 Universities in City of Sumy, the city's architecture includes religious buildings which belong to the XVII-XIX centuries.
